GOD'S POWER.
IS HE BIG ENOUGH TO MEET YOUR NEEDS?
Have you placed your needs before Him?
'But the LORD said to Moses, 'Don't limit my power! You will see that I can do what I say I can do.' (Numbers 11:23, Easy-to-read Version, ERV). Whenever we are anxious we only need to remember how infinitely big God is.
HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD?
Let us humbly acknowledge how little we are and how incredibly huge God is. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, He created the Universe. We are nothing at all compared to the size of the star Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion which is just another star to God. He created trillions and trillions of them. To appreciate how trivial our issues are in relation to the awesome power of our God, we shall consider some of the stars He created. Putting size aside, let's remember that each one of them radiates light because of the continuous atomic explosions deep within them. God keeps the explosions under control, just enough for them to radiate whatever He wants.
Yet, He stoops down and knows every little detail about our situations. How He does that we cannot imagine. Our guardian angels and the Holy Spirit, who resides in us, report everything to the Father and the Son. (Matthew 18:10).God can obviously dilate or contract time - somehow He manages to have plenty of time for each one of us. The Bible says so. We don't understand. Our job is to believe Him. Why did God destroy so many Israelites in the wilderness? Because of their unbelief!
The Relative sizes of stars and our planet are shown below. The Earth is very small compared to the Sun, but to illustrate the enormous size of Betelgeuse we have to change the scale on our star chart because the Sun is so tiny compared to Betelgeuse.
To appreciate how big the stars Antares and Betelgeuse are relative to our Sun, follow the red star in the split chart below.
Betelgeuse is 1440 times bigger than the Sun. If Betelgeuse were placed in the center of our solar system, Betelgeuse would fill the solar system to the outer perimeter of Jupiter’s circuit around the Sun. Yet they are all in God’s hands. He created not only these, but the billions of galaxies in outer space.
THE IMMENSE EXPANSE OF THE UNIVERSE
If God is God, then He is bigger than the Universe. Our telescopes have a limit to how far they can explore deep space. In the observable universe there are approximately 100 billion galaxies, ie. 100,000,000,000. The galaxy we live in, the Milky Way, contains about 100 billion stars. NASA astronomers have constructed the shape of the Milky Way and our location in one of the spiral arms. (Detailed acknowledgements for the images at the end of this article).

The small yellow circle in one of the spiral arms is the location of our Sun. It does not indicate the size of the Sun which would be too minute to show

There are numerous clusters of galaxies in space. Astronomers estimate that there are at least,
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the known universe. Since God created them all, how big is God to you now?
THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE
The more I look, the more my God is getting bigger and bigger, whether I consider the minuscule, the nano-machines in our bodies, or the expanding universe. I gain more and more confidence that He can do whatever He promised He can do. Salvation and the resurrection to come sounds too good to be true – but He will perform it. If you think this universe is big, just wait until you see the new Heavens and Earth. There will be plenty of space for more things to do! God never stops moving forward.
‘O Jehovah, how great are Your works; Your purposes are very deep’. (Psalms 92:5)
'God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also’. (Genesis 1:16). ‘By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host’. (Psalm 33:6)
May you find the same inspiration and comfort that I did.
MAKING THE EARTH HABITABLE
The March 2018 issue of National Geographic lists 13 factors about our solar system that makes the Earth a habitable spaceship. God had to get a lot of cosmic factors just right for life to exist on Earth. His powers and wisdom are unfathomable. The 13 factors are:
-
Our planet recycles life-friendly carbon over time.
-
We have an ozone layer to protect us from harmful rays.
-
We have a big moon to stabilize our axial wobble.
-
Earth's varied surfaces support many life-forms.
-
Our magnetic field deflects solar tempests.
-
We're at just the right distance from the Sun.
-
We're situated safely away from gas giants.
-
The Sun is a stable long-lasting star.
-
We have the right stuff to host a dynamic core.
-
We have giant planets (Jupiter etc) that protect us from afar.
-
Our Sun offers protection from galactic debris.
-
Our galactic path steers us clear of hazards.
-
Our location is far from stellar crowds (supernovae, etc)
Of course, we have to keep in mind that the Bible says that if we disobey and sin then He will cause our environment to suffer along with us.
